In 1956 Harry Belafonte released an album titled “Calypso”. One of the songs on it was “Jamaica Farewell” where a sailor sings about his sadness at leaving Jamaica and the woman he loves. One of the verses goes as follows:

Down the market you can hear
Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear
‘Akey’ rice, salt fish are nice
And the rum is fine any time of year

And it only took sixty-three years for me to find out what Harry was singing about.

I know that song! I was really happy to see someone interacting with this post. Ackee and salt fish is one of my favorite Jamaican dishes.
