I lived on this island for three and a half years in the 1980’s.
The sign for the Adak National Forest was still there when I left in 1989.
This was the most interesting duty station I was ever at in my twenty year Navy career.

I met my wife there. Both of my children were born there. I had a step-son that went to high school there (12 students in the senior class).

Now I believe it’s been turned into a hunting and fishing mecca. Caribou, Arctic Fox, and Ptarmigan were popular to hunt or trap.

Wintering over was always an experience. Stayed dark most of the time and was cold.

As miserable as it was, I’d like to go back to see the place. Google Maps doesn’t do it justice as so much has changed from what I remember.
