Banded Iron Formation Stone

Welcome to the Atlas Obscura Community discussion of Banded Iron Formation Stone in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ask questions or share travel tips, experiences, pictures, or general comments with the community. For the story behind this place, check out the Atlas Obscura entry:

The rock is Jaspilite. You can find it occurring naturally in central Marquette County, Michigan, which is likely where the sample in your story came from. There’s a large piece outside of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum that is tagged with the location found, Ishpeming, Michigan, where one part of the town is situated on a large bluff composed of it (Jasper Knob).

Along the transCanada highway near Sault Ste Marie (Ontario, Canada) there is a rock cut and you can clearly see where there was a significant change in oxygen level in the Precambrian era. If you are geologically oriented (or for that matter, forestry oriented), the area around Sault Ste Marie is truly fascinating. I should add too, if you have an interest in history too (ie. St Joseph Island).
