Does anyone know how a vast pile of boulders came to be there in one place? What sort of geology formed this place? Very curious!

One theory is that it was once a solid mass that fractured into blocks which weathered into rounded boulders. As the article says, they do crack when exposed to sudden temperature changes.
They make a ringing sound when hit with a rock or a hammer. I’ve been there a few times and have tried that myself.
