Cape Coast Castle

Welcome to the Atlas Obscura Community discussion of Cape Coast Castle in Cape Coast, Ghana. Ask questions or share travel tips, experiences, pictures, or general comments with the community. For the story behind this place, check out the Atlas Obscura entry:

Our visit to Cape Coast Castle affected us deeply. To think that my husband’s ancestors might have gone through there, or somewhere similar, survived and succeeded enough that he is here today, is amazing.

Once you’ve been in the slave dungeons, it’s a feeling you’ll never forget. This is a tour not to be missed.

Do be aware that the touts around the castle can be very aggressive. But being Ghanaian, they’re still friendly, mostly. Just keep your shields up as you pass through them. The artist co-op inside the castle is fine and low pressure.

Also note, that the Door of No Return at nearby Elmina Castle is far more wicked than the one at Cape Coast Castle. I know this feature is about Cape Coast Castle, but it’s hard to imagine visiting here and not including a trip to Elmina Castle as well. There are some great and interesting things to do in Cape Coast and is definitely worth your time while you’re in Ghana.
