Most Native American boat builders used hollowed-out logs for their canoes, but the local Chumash built theirs from planks because they were able to seal the seams with tar from the local seeps. Their carpenter shop was near a sycamore tree that still exists today, on Sixth Street east of Palm Avenue, it’s City Historical Landmark number 5.
