Peale fans should be sure to visit the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, founded by Peale and originally named the Columbianum. This self-portrait hangs there, along with many portraits of his children. You will also want to see the “Staircase Group,” the trompe-l’oiel portrait of his son ascending the stairs, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and on the wall adjacent to the painting you’ll find a ticket from his natural history museum. More ephemera from Peale and family is in the collection of the American Philosophical Society. Enjoy!
