Every year, my friends decorated beautiful fat pine trees with thickly needled branches. And every year, my parents hunted and hunted, finally choosing the best Norway spruce they could find in the midwest. Our trees always had long, droopy branches and sparse needles, with long stretches of bare trunk between. I’m 70 now, but still remember that childhood shame.
