Eleulthera, the Bahamas

Junkanoo: this is a true Bahamian tradition. It occurs mainly mainly at Christmas on all the Bahamian islands. However, many of the family islands stage mini junkanoo parades during their homecoming weeks.
On Eleuthera Junkanoo is during homecomings in various settlements, and at Christmas. Junkanoo is a parade complete with costumes totally made from colorful paper; lots of marchers from tots to adult participate in The Rush ( which is what the march is called). Music is provided by cowbells, whistles, horns, and drums. It is colorful and loud and fun. Unfortunately, many parades begin at midnight when the weather is cooler.
Tarpum Bay elementary has won the national competition held in Nassau the past four years.
It’s worth experiencing this interesting tradition.
