Empty swimming pool

When Eastman Kodak built a new employee recreation building at there plant in Rochester NY they included an Olympic sized swimming pool. It was on the third floor of the building. when the building was completed the engineers realized that the structure would not support the weight of the pool when filled with water. The pool became a very expensive spot for photo shots…

That’s an awkward realization to make after you’ve built the thing :joy:

The only empty swimming pool I’ve ever seen is at the Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore belonged to the Vanderbilt family of railroad magnates, so no expense was spared on the mansion, which includes an indoor swimming pool in the basement. It would hold 70,000 gallons if it was full (I can’t find info on how deep it is, but it looks like at least ten feet). I saw it when I was a child, so it looked like a bottomless cavern to me.
