The F.R.E.D. has a longer history than this article suggests. The Australian War Memorial has a F.R.E.D. in its collection. It dates from WWII and was issued to and used by Lieutenant A Treloar, 2/14 Battalion AIF. It’s still in its original issue wrapping with instructions. This suggests that the device was introduced in the early 1940s. What’s more, it can do much more than open a can. As well as being a spoon, it can clean fingernails or assault weapons, serve as a make-shift screwdriver and has many other uses.
