La Llorona was a big deal to me as a kid in New Mexico. Instead of saying Bloody Mary in a dark bathroom you would say La Llorona. Definitely a cultural symbol, she also became a very real warning. She was the ditch witch and was crucial for kids to learn that ditches are deadly. In a land where arroyos can be dry one minute and the next filled with rushing water and debris it was an important lesson.
