I had the chance to try this fruit while traveling with Atlas Obscura in Ecuador. We visited a local Huaorani tribe and someone in the village brought us samples of the fruit. It reminded me texturally of similar looking fruits—those with edible flesh around a large seed like cherimoya or cacao. The flavor was really delicious but it sure didn’t taste like any ice cream I’d ever tried. No better names to offer, but I’d eat it again in a heartbeat.
I looked for this everywhere when I was living in Brazil recently but never did succeed in finding it
My family is from Guatemala and they love this stuff. They call it “cuje.” My uncle brought some back on his last trip. My mom is actually growing a tree in our yard.
