A much better lava tube to visit is in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Thurston Lava Tube (no, it’s not named after Mr. Howell) is a short way south on Crater Rim Drive. It runs for about 400’ and gets up to 20’ in diameter. It’s just a short hike from the parking area through a beautiful forest of Ohia & Hapu’u ferns.

Sadly, it’s closed for now until they finish checking it’s structure after the 2018 volcanic eruption and earthquakes. The vast crater of Kilauea is still a sight to see. Be sure to try the Bacon Swiss Cheeseburger at the bowling alley at Kilauea Military Center too!
