Welcome to the Atlas Obscura Community discussion of Lamprey. Ask questions or share tips, experiences, pictures, or general comments with the community. For the story behind this food, check out the Atlas Obscura entry:

Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest have been eating lampreys for thousands of years too. Some indigenous nations have their annual lamprey harvest written into treaties. So the question is, why Europeans stopped eating lampreys when they came to the Americas. They had no trouble eating eels until the early 20th century (I have published a paper on this), so it could not be simply disgust at their snakelike appearance.

Henry I of England is said to have died of a surfeit of lampreys. (When I was a kid I was also told that when they tried to insert his body into the crypt it exploded. Very messily. That may have just been schoolboy embroidery, though.)
