Murals of Maxo Vanka

Welcome to the Atlas Obscura Community discussion of Murals of Maxo Vanka in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ask questions or share travel tips, experiences, pictures, or general comments with the community. For the story behind this place, check out the Atlas Obscura entry:

We enjoyed a 45 minute lecture on the murals and the life of Maxo Vanka. The church and the art provide a colorful introduction to the development of the Croatian community of 1890-1940 in Pittsburgh and the life of an interesting artist. The murals depicting WWI (a gas mask, for instance) and social justice leave an impression. It’s unlikely that a tourist coming to Pittsburgh for a day or two will get the timing right, but for someone who lives here, it is worth the time. Our lecturer (also a docent) was quite good.
