Nello and Patrasche

Welcome to the Atlas Obscura Community discussion of Nello and Patrasche in Belgium. Ask questions or share travel tips, experiences, pictures, or general comments with the community. For the story behind this place, check out the Atlas Obscura entry:

This story is about a Bouvier des Flandres, which is an intelligent, large and powerful working and herd dog. In addition, they were used for pulling milk carts with hundreds of pounds of fresh milk, and during the First World War, they were one of several breeds used to pull stretchers with injured Allied soldiers off the battlefield. The hound shown could not possibly do that work. They have many admired talents, but they could not possibly pull milk carts or herd cattle because they do not have the necessary muscle or mass.
So please, remember that ‘The Dog of Flanders’ is a Bouvier, not the very nice hound in the sculpture.
