Stories like this are fascinating, and the photos back that up; however, it made me wonder what the cottages looked like beforehand. A ‘before and after’ if you will. Wikipedia shows this, at least: 300px-TattingstoneFolly_rear


There is another story - the landowner was annoyed at the locals who always seemed to be wondering about everything except what they should have been doing, and so he decided to give them something to wonder at. You have to understand that, in this most eastern part of England, civilisation took a fair while to make itself felt, even in the 19th century, and old ways died hard. Rural folk would have been seen as terribly dim to outsiders. And yes, I live about 10 miles from this site, and know it very well.
