(This is only tangentially related to the original post, but…)

In downtown Los Angeles, there is a park (Pershing Square) named after General “Black Jack” Pershing; it was set aside as a park in 1866 but named after the general in 1918.

After the Iranian revolution in 1979, there was a wave of immigration from Iran; many of the new arrivals settled in the “Wilshire Corridor” of West LA - so many that the area is sometimes called “Tehrangeles”. More to the point, there’s now an intersection (Westwood/Wilkins) officially designated as “Persian Square”.

I don’t know whether the Pershing Square/Persian Square parallel was intended as humorous, but it still puts a smile on my face whenever I drive past the sign.
