Hi Jonathan, one of the reasons for the abscence of people in these images is simply, the long exposure times required by the primitive plate and processing technology of the 1850’s. Recently, I published a technical article on 19th C photography on the Pink and White Terraces in New Zealand, an Eighth Wonder of the World, and noted the abscence of bird life for the same reason.
