I am not quite sure of its origin but there is a Spanish saying “Los amantes de Teruel: tonta ella, tonto el.” roughly meaning “The lovers of Teruel: she was stupid and so was he.” It probably comes from the Spanish picaresque tradition and suggests that they should have just got on with it rather than waiting around as commanded by her father.
