The coumarin content of Tonka Beans is virtually equivalent to the coumarin equivalent of Cinnamon. The reason for the ban on Tonka Beans is political and is the Vanilla lobby’s fault.

Another source of that flavor is buffalo grass, the flavoring agent in Zubrovka vodka. The Zubrovka available here in the US uses some artificial agent – don’t know what but it’s coumarin-free, and not totally convincing.

We see Tonka beans at all the department-store food courts when we go to Paris, and have thought about getting some … but getting busted by Customs for BEANS? We’d never live that down!

It is often used in fine perfumes. Perfume regulations in Europe are also touchy about its use.
