Updates to the Place submission form

Hi AO Community,

Hope that you all had a wondrous holiday season! You may have noticed that we rolled out an update to our Places submission form around the holidays that included a simplified form and a character limit on initial submissions.

The changes were made with a few goals in mind: simplify the submission process and reduce the wait between submission and publication. We found that our process had a fairly high barrier to entry for newer members of the community and that the sting of rejection turned some potential contributors off. We hoped that shortening the initial submission would make it easier for more people to contribute places, and also make the editorial review process more efficient.

But after hearing a lot of feedback from many of the dedicated members of the AO community, we’ve decided to roll back the character limit on the submission form. It will still be in place for the next few days, but we anticipate that the update will be ready next week.

Thank you for sharing your concerns with us—the Atlas wouldn’t be what it is without your contributions, and I can’t tell you how much we appreciate the places that you share with us.

We’re still working on additional changes that we hope will improve the experience of contributing to Atlas Obscura. We will have more information to share as we’re ready to roll out these changes over the next few months. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback!

Many thanks for returning to the original submission requirements. I think the AO staff, and readers, will benefit from higher-quality submissions.
